Milk teeth preserve space for permanent teeth. If they have deep cavities, root canals are performed to preserve the child's teeth until permanent teeth erupt. If this is not done, teeth will be lost, and misalignment may occur. Additionally, infection from milk teeth can damage the underlying permanent tooth.

FAQ'S

These milk teeth preserve space for the permanent teeth. If there is a gap between the milk teeth, it is a good sign; this gap will eventually be utilized by the permanent teeth because they are larger in size. So, do not worry if there is a gap between the milk teeth.

Permanent teeth start developing at birth and form just below the deciduous teeth. If cavities in deciduous teeth are not treated promptly, they can affect permanent teeth in two ways:

Firstly, untreated cavities can deepen and transmit infection to the underlying permanent tooth. This infection from the milk tooth can alter the size, shape, color, texture, and eruption time of a permanent tooth.

Secondly, untreated cavities lead to early loss of deciduous teeth. The timing of when the milk tooth falls out is crucial because they preserve space for the permanent tooth until it is ready to emerge. Not all milk teeth fall out at the same time; they fall out at regular intervals. Therefore, if untreated cavities are left in milk teeth, they may fall out prematurely. Once they fall out, the spaces between milk teeth are closed by neighboring teeth. This closure of space can lead to abnormal positioning of permanent teeth, resulting in crooked and malpositioned permanent teeth, which not only affect the child’s appearance but can also cause speech and facial growth problems.

A clinical check-up and an X-ray can help us determine the approximate time when a permanent tooth will emerge in the mouth. If the time for the appearance of a permanent tooth is prolonged, then a space maintainer should be used to preserve the space.

Habits like thumb-sucking, nail-biting, and mouth breathing have harmful effects on both teeth and gums. Thumb sucking can lead to forwardly placed permanent front teeth, nail biting can cause crooked teeth, and mouth breathing can lead to chronic swelling of gums. That’s why these habits should be intercepted at the right age using habit-breaking appliances.

Following steps can be taken
1)    Always make sure that your child is brushing his teeth in a proper manner i.e. downwards for the upper teeth and upwards for the lower teeth. Also get into the habit of brushing teeth at bedtime.
2)   Never leave the milk bottle in child’s mouth for long time, because the bacteria ferment this milk and cavities are caused.
3) Encourage children to brush their teeth after they eat anything sticky like chocolates, sweets, chips etc.
4)    Regular dental check-up is important.
5)    Fluoride applications help in reducing cavities in both milk and permanent teeth.
